A certain kind of death (2003)

Caitlin Doughty’s book ‘Smoke gets in your eyes and other lessons from the crematory’ she meantions in detail the gruesome details of the condition of the corpses delivered to her mortuary which are often not just deceased in clean white hospital gowns. Which lead me onto needing to satisfying my want to learn more about behind the seems of post-mortem care and my love of documentaries seemed to have fulfilled that. Directors Grover Babcock and Blue Hadaegh made interviewed various Los Angeles county morgue employees as they calmly confront death of a daily basis.

This film was raw, eye opening and unsettling showing bodies found in a variety of circumstances in various levels of decomposition. It takes away the glamourisation of the death industry and shows the importance of human connection and that death isnt how its seen in the movies. I highly recommend this film for the curious with strong stomachs.IMG_0402
